 Trichotillomania Hair Solutions

Private, Thoughtful Options for Fuller-Looking Hair

Hair pulling can affect much more than the way your hair looks. It can change how you feel about photographs, appointments, dating, work, swimming, and everyday styling.

At 🩷 PDX Hair Extensions, your consultation is private, respectful, and free from judgment. Our goal is to understand your hair as it is today and explore a cosmetic solution that supports your comfort, confidence, and scalp health.

What Is Trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania, also called hair-pulling disorder, is a mental health condition involving repeated urges to pull hair from the scalp or other areas. Pulling can happen intentionally or without full awareness. It may result in uneven density, broken hairs, exposed areas, irritation, scarring, or permanent hair loss in some cases.

A salon cannot diagnose or treat trichotillomania. Evidence-based clinical care may include therapy—particularly habit-reversal training—and, in some cases, medication discussed with a licensed healthcare professional.

Our role is different: we provide cosmetic hair and styling support for suitable clients while protecting the remaining hair and respecting the condition of the scalp.

Are extensions always safe for Trichotillomania?

No. No extension method is appropriate for every client or every affected area. Attached hair adds weight and can create tension. Candidacy depends on the health and strength of the remaining hair, scalp condition, placement, pulling pattern, and maintenance.

Can Hair Extensions Help Cover Hair Loss From Pulling?

Sometimes—but not every extension method is appropriate for every area or every client. A successful plan depends on the location and size of the affected area, the strength and density of the surrounding hair, whether pulling is active near the proposed attachment area, the condition of the scalp, the amount of coverage desired, and the client’s ability to return for maintenance.

Extensions and weaves can add tension to natural hair. Repeated tension may cause breakage or traction alopecia, and long-term follicle injury can become permanent.

For that reason, we do not advertise any method as universally “damage-free,” and we will not attach hair to a weak, painful, inflamed, or unsafe foundation.

A customized topper, integration piece, partial hair system,

or strategic blending plan may provide better coverage than traditional length extensions

The top and crown may not offer enough healthy anchor hair for standard extension placement

Temple, front hairline, or delicate perimeter loss

A fringe piece, topper, custom hairpiece, or non-tension styling strategy may be preferable

Fine perimeter hair is especially vulnerable to visible stress and traction

Lower back, nape, or behind-the-ear area

Carefully selected lightweight placement away from the affected area, a partial piece, or strategic blending may be considered

Movement, friction, and limited anchor hair can change what the area can safely support

Diffuse thinning or several affected areas

A topper, wig, integration system, or custom hair system may offer more even coverage than loading individual fragile sections

A broader solution can distribute or avoid weight instead of asking scattered weak hair to carry attachments

Red, sore, scabbed, infected, open, or very tender scalp

No installation until the area has been evaluated and is appropriate for cosmetic service

Warning

Irritated or injured skin requires medical—not salon—assessment

Our Private Consultation Process

Clear expectations before you decide to proceed

If we believe an attached service could place too much stress on your remaining hair, we will tell you directly. In some cases, the most responsible answer is to wait, request clearance from a dermatologist or other licensed healthcare professional, or select a non-attached coverage option.

Experience Without Exposure

We have successfully helped clients create fuller-looking, more balanced styles when patchy or uneven density made ordinary extension appointments difficult. Each result required a different plan. We protect client privacy and do not publish identifying photographs, detailed case maps, attachment formulas, or step-by-step technical instructions without specific written permission.

Individual results vary. Previous client success does not guarantee that an extension service will be suitable for every pattern of hair loss or pulling.

Every client begins with a one-on-one consultation. We look at the scalp and hair only within the limits of a cosmetology consultation;

we do not diagnose a medical condition. We discuss where you are currently pulling, which areas feel sensitive, what you use to cover the area now, your styling routine, and what result would feel most natural to you.

Are extensions always safe for Trichotillomania?

No. No extension method is appropriate for every client or every affected area. Attached hair adds weight and can create tension. Candidacy depends on the health and strength of the remaining hair, scalp condition, placement, pulling pattern, and maintenance.

Comfort and Safety Come Before the Finished Look

Hair extensions should not feel painful or excessively tight. The American Academy of Dermatology advises that if an extension or weave hurts or feels too tight, the affected area should be loosened.3 Persistent tension can contribute to breakage and traction-related hair loss. Early signs of traction injury may include redness around follicles, breakage, and thinning in tension-bearing areas.

Contact us promptly if you experience pain, burning, persistent tightness, new redness, sores, unusual shedding, or a sudden increase in breakage. Depending on the concern, the safest response may be adjustment, removal, or medical evaluation.
